Picket Fences! Parts 18

At the Anderson house, Joy and Larry's daughter Arlene has recovered from German measles. She missed three days of school but since she's an A+ student, her grades didn't suffer too badly.



She looked happy as she got on the schoolbus. Today is her birthday and this afternoon her family
and friends will watch her grow up into a teenager at her birthday party.



A few minutes after Arlene left for school, her Larry's carpool arrived to take him to work.



Joy called her mother Joyce . . .
"Mom, Arlene is over the measles. She went back to school today. Do you need me to come get Kevin or can you bring him home?"



"I'll bring him home this afternoon when I come to Arlene's party. That will give you the day free to get things ready", said Joyce.
"Thanks Mom. I'll see you this afternoon then", said Joy.


As soon as Joy hung up from talking to Joyce the telephone starting ringing.
"Hello", she said.


"Joy, I need to talk to you. Can you meet me somewhere? How about the zoo?", asked Rhys.
"Alright, I'll be there in a few minutes. I'll meet you inside", she said.




Joy arrived at the zoo shortly.


And Rhys walked in the front entrance a few minutes afterwards.


They went over to the benches to sit down.


"I haven't seen you for awhile. How have you been? You were pretty upset the last time I talked to you on the telephone", he said.
"I was, but I thought about it and decided what happened between you and your maid was before we got involved", she said.
"So you forgive me?", he asked.
"Yes, I'm alright with you having a son with your maid", she said.


"Joy, why didn't you tell me YOU had a son?", he asked.


"There really wasn't any reason I should", she said.


"Joy, isn't me being his father reason enough?", asked Rhys.
"Rhys, Larry's his father", she said.


Rhys stood up and shouted,"You're lying!"


Then he walked away.


He called a taxicab.


When he got off the telephone Joy was waiting for him.
"Rhys, please let me explain", she said.


"After I talked to you that afternoon, I went into labor and Kevin was born. Then Larry and Arlene came home and Larry thought the baby was his. He was so proud and happy. I didn't have the heart to tell him you were Kevin's father. It would break his heart if I told him now. Please understand", she cried.
"Alright, I'll go along with your little charade for now, but I want to be able to see my son and get to know him", said Rhys.



Then he got into the waiting taxicab.



Later that afternoon back over at Joy's house . . .


"Daddy, how much longer do I have to wait before my party starts?", asked Arlene.
"As soon as Grandma Joyce brings Kevin home and the other guests get here", said Larry.



Joyce brought Kevin home a little later.
"He's such a good boy. It was a pleasure having him", said Joyce.
"Did you have fun at Grandma's house?", asked Joy.
"Un huh. Play Ry", said Kevin.
"Isn't that cute? He's trying to talk", said Joy.


The guests had arrived and were waiting for Arlene to blow out the candles on her birthday cake.

Arlene made a wish and blew out the candles.






Everyone cheered and wished her happy birthday!


Arlene started to grow up and . . .




She grew up into a very pretty teenager.


Arlene flirted and played with Jimmy.




And Jimmy's little brother Nathan was fighting with Julie.


Nathan has grown up into a cute, but angry little boy.


While everyone was occupied outside, Joyce went inside to call Rhys.
"Hello Rhys, it's Joyce. Since I'm in the neighborhood, would you like some company?", she asked.


"Sure, come on over", he said.
"I'll be there as soon as I say my goodbyes here", she said.



"Arlene, I'm glad I was here to see you grow up. I just wish your grandfather could have been here", said Joyce.


"I'm glad you were here, too", said Arlene., as Joyce gave her a hug.


"Mom you don't have to hurry off. Come in and have a cup of coffee", said Joy.
"No, I better be getting on home. You know I don't like to be out after dark", said Joyce.



"Bye Mom", said Joy.
"Bye sweetheart", said Joyce.


Then Joyce walked across the street to Rhys' place.




She went into the house and Rhys came down the hall to greet her.


He gave her a romantic hug.
"I've been thinking about you ever since you left the other day", she said.
"Have you been thinking what I hope you have?", he asked.
"I think you know", she said.


Rhys surprised her when he picked her up in his arms and carried her down the hall . . .


To his bedroom and laid her on his bed. They made out.


Then in the middle of their lovemaking Rhys stopped and started to get up.
"Wait, where are you going?", asked Joyce.
"Ryan's crying. I'll be back in a few minutes", he said.



Rhys took Ryan out of his crib and took the toddler to the potty.
"Now I want you to go back to sleep. Alright?", said Rhys.
"Sure Daddy", he said.


Rhys returned to the bedroom where Joyce was waiting.
"Was he alright?", she asked.
"Sure, he just had to go to the toilet", said Rhys.


"Now where were we?", he asked.


Rhys gave Joyce a romantic kiss.


"Do you want me Joyce?", he asked.
"What woman in her right mind wouldn't", she answered.


Woo Hoo!


"You want to spend the night?", he asked.

"I'd like nothing better, but I better not. I'd have a hard time explaining if anybody was to see me coming out of your house in the morning", she said.

"You sound like somebody else I know", he laughed.




"You're welcome to come back again when you're in the neighborhood", he said.

"Thank you. I might just take you up on the offer", she said.


"Bye Rhys. It was fun", said Joyce.
"Yeah, for me, too", he said.


Rhys went back to bed . . .



And Joyce left to go home.

Glad to see Kevin back home with his momma. And the birthday girl sure did turn out to be a pretty teenager. I hope she gets married and lives happily every after with nice handsome guy.. After she graduates form college of cource...lol

Back over at Joy's house after Arlene's birthday party . . .


Arlene offered to put her little brother Kevin to bed. She figured it would be good practice for when she got married and had childern of her own.


Even though she and Jimmy Martin had been friends since they were toddlers, she suddenly found herself daydreaming about him being more than just a friend.


"Well, our little girl has grown up into quite a beautiful young lady", said Larry.

"Yes, she has", said Joy, "Doesn't it make us seem old being parents of a teenager."


"We're not THAT old. We just got started young. We weren't much more than teenagers ourselves when we got married", he said.

"I know, but I could hardly wait to be a wife and mother", she said.

"I hope you don't regret getting married so young. I know I never have", he said.

"No I don't regret it. You're the best husband anyone could wish for", she said.


"Let's go inside and relax on our bed, alright?", he said.

"Alright", she said.


"It's been a long time since we've done this", he said.

"I know. You've been very patient", she said.

"I realize the baby has taken a lot of your time and energy", he said.


He gave her a romantic kiss.


And they did woo hoo!


Larry scooted up close behind her and . . .


They both soon fell asleep . . .

And Joy dreamed about . . .


The first time she danced with Rhys over at his place . . .


The first time she arranged to meet him at the coffee shop . . .


The first time the kissed in the hottub at the zoo . . .


The one time they did woo hoo in his bed . . .


The picnic they went on in the woods and his incredible smile just for her . . .


Their last meeting at the zoo, when he got so angry and everything fell apart.


Then Joy woke up and realized all that had happened with Rhys wasn't a dream. How had she allowed her lust for him to replace her love for Larry? She was a grown woman and had been acting like a silly schoolgirl.


She lay back down and went back to sleep.


Over at Joyce's house . . .


When Joyce arrived home from Rhys' place, she starting feeling really bad.


She was having servere pains in her chest.


She called the hospital and talked to Dr. Brian.

"Doctor I'm having pains in my chest and I'm feeling really bad", she said.


"It's probably just a bad case of indigestion, but you better come on in tonight and let me take a look at you", he said.

"Alright, I'll be there in a few minutes", she said.


She sit back down on the sofa. The pains in her chest had moved to her head.




She needed to go to the hospital right away, but she wasn't able to get up off the couch.


The next morning over at Rhys' place . . .


His maid Jasmyn Carlson came to work as usual. When she walked into the kitchen she was surprised.


"Today is our son's birthday and he's been waiting for his mama to come so he can growup", said Rhys.


Rhys brought Ryan to his birthday cake and helped him blow out the candles and when he put him down . . .


Ryan grew up into a cute child who looked even more like his daddy.


Rhys gave him a birthday hug.


Jasmyn gave him a "Family Kiss".


"Thank you Beautiful", said Rhys, "That little boy is the best gift anyone has ever given me."

"You're welcome", said Jasmyn, "And believe me. It was my pleasure."

"Do you want me to stay and hang out after I finish my work?", she asked.

"No, not today. I got something to do", said Rhys.


The schoolbus came for Ryan at 8:30 AM. He was happy to go to school even if it was his birthday today.


Jasmyn finished her work and left soon after Ryan.


Rhys called Joy . . .

"Hey Beautiful, can I come over and see my son today?", he asked.


"I guess it'll be alright, but just for a little while. Come in the backdoor so the neighbors won't see you, alright?", she said.

"Sure, anything you say. I'll be there in a few minutes". said Rhys.


"Now remember, don't let Kevin know who you are. He's starting to repeat everything he hears", said Joy.

"Alright, I'll go by your rules. I just want to get to know my son", said Rhys.


The telephone was ringing and Joy went to answer it.

"Hey Kevin", said Rhys.


"Hello", said Joy.


"Joy, this is Dr. Brian, your mother was admitted to the hospital last night. She was pretty bad, but she's stable now, he said"


"What happened to her?", asked Joy.

"She suffered a mild heart attack", he said.


"Thank you doctor. I'll be right there", she said.


"He seems to like you and doesn't mind you holding him", said Joy, "Would you mind staying with him while I go to the hospital to see my mother?"

"Sure", said Rhys, "Is your mama going to be alright?"

"Yes, I think so. I just want to go see her for a little while", said Joy.


Joy hurried out of the house to go to the hospital.

Joy soon arrived at Buford Falls Hospital . . .


She entered Joyce's room. Her mother looked so pale, her skin almost blending into the bedsheets.


She sit in the chair beside the bed.

"Mom, how are you feeling?", she asked.

"Tired", said Joyce.

"It's probably the medicine the doctor gave you", said Joy, "You'll feel better soon."


Just then Dr. Brian came into the room . . .
"Your mother needs to rest. I've given her something to make her sleep", he said, "She'll feel better in a few days."


"I'm so relieved to hear that. I don't know what I would do if anything happened to her", said Joy.

"There's not really anything you can do for her here. You need to go on home. Come back tomorrow after you both have had some rest", he said.


So Joy did what the doctor ordered and left to go home.


Meanwhile, back over at Joy's house . . .


Rhys and Kevin were in the nursery playing with the Noah's Ark . . .


When Arlene came home from school.


She got a snack and turned on the television. She hadn't even noticed that her mother wasn't home.


Rhys put Kevin in his crib for a nap.


He walked into the livingroom where Arlene was reading a book.


She looked up when she heard footsteps.

"Hey, aren't you Mr. Sawyer who lives across the street?", she asked.

"Yeah that's me", he said, "But you can call me Rhys."


"What are you doing in my house?", she asked.


"Your mother had to go someplace and asked me to stay with Kevin", he explained. He didn't tell her where Joy had gone. He figured it was better to let Joy tell her about her grandmother.


"Hey, look at the time", he said.


"I got to go home", he said.


Rhys left to get home before the schoolbus dropped off Ryan . . .


And Arlene suddenly found herself daydreaming about the neighbor across the street.


Just a little while after Rhys got home Ryan came home from school.

When the telephone started ringing Ryan picked it up.

"Hello", he said.


"Ryan, this is Mary. What you doing?"


"I just got home from school. I ain't had time to do nothing yet", he said.

"Me neither", she said, "See you at school tomorrow. Bye!"

"Bye Mary", he said.


"Who was that on the telephone?", asked Rhys.

"Just some dumb girl in my class", said Ryan.

"What did she want?", asked Rhys.

"She didn't want nothing. I don't know why she even called me", he said.


"Maybe she wants to be friends", said Rhys.

"But she's a girl Dad", said Ryan.

"Some of my best friends are girls", said Rhys.


"Dad, Mary's best friend Heather told me that Mary thought I was a drooly guy. Is that something good?", asked Ryan.


"A drooly guy means you're cute", said Rhys, "Being a drooly guy makes it easier."

"Makes what easier?", asked Ryan.

"Ask me again when you're a teenager", said Rhys.


"Dad, I'm glad I'm a drooly guy like you", said Ryan.

"Yeah, me too", said Rhys.


Back over at Joy's house, she has returned home from the hospital.


On a whim she decided to cut her hair and try a new style she saw in the lastest issue of McCall's magazine. Now that she thought about it she wasn't sure if she liked it or not. Well, what is done is done, she'd just have to live with it until it grew back out.


"Where did you go today? Rhys said you had to go somewhere. He didn't tell me where", said Arlene.

"Grandma is in the hospital. I went to see her. Don't worry, she's going to be fine in a few days", said Joy.

"Thank goodness", said Arlene.

"I'm sorry I was late getting home. I hope Rhys didn't frighten you by being here", said Joy.

"No, he didn't frighten me Mother. I knew who he was. I've seen him coming and going around the neighborhood", said Arlene.



"Arlene, will you do me a favor and not mention to your father that Rhys was here?", said Joy, "He might get the wrong idea."

"Yeah, sure. Mum's the word", said Arlene.


Then Larry came in the door from work and Kevin ran over to him and asked for attention. Larry gave the toddler a "Family Kiss" and talked to him.


"I'll give Kevin his bath and put him to bed so you and Mom can talk", said Arlene.

"Tell Mama and Daddy goodnight Kevin", she said.

"Sure", said Kevin, "Nite nite."


After Arlene finished Kevin's bath . . .


She held him up to the mirror.

"You don't look much like my brother", she thought to herself, noticing how different she and Kevin looked, "You look like . . . no, it's just my imagination."


Then she put Kevin in his crb and kissed him goodnight.


"Larry, mom's in the hospital. Dr. Brian said she had a slight heart attack", said Joy

"Does he think she'll be alright?", he asked.

"Yes, when I went over there today, Dr, Brian said she needed to stay in the hospital a few days and rest", said Joy.

"Well, that's good. I'm glad she's going to be alright", he said.
"I need to call MaryLou and ask if she can stay with Kevin tomorrow", said Joy.


"MaryLou, my mom's in the hospital. She had a slight heart attack. Will you stay with Kevin tomorrow while I go to see her?"


"Of course, you know I will", said MaryLou, "I'll come over as soon as Julie leaves for school. And if there's anything else I can do, just ask."


"Is she going to be able to stay again tomorrow?", asked Larry.

"She only stayed until Arlene came home from school. MaryLou won't mind staying again. She said if there was anything else she could do, for me to ask", said Joy.

"You must be tired, I'll order a pizza for supper, so you won't have to cook", said Larry.


Larry called Delivery and ordered a pizza.

"Your pizza will be there is a few minutes", she said.


Arlene accepted the delivery when it came.


"I can probably get off work early tomorrow, if you need me to go with you to the hospital", said Larry.

"No, that's alright. You can visit Mom when she goes home. We really can't afford for you to take the time off", said Joy.


Joy and Larry went to bed early and fell right to sleep.


But Arlene laid awake until the wee hours of the morning, thinking about the drooly guy right across the street.
